World Environment Day, Sauerkraut and Thrifty Finds!

http://bit.ly/1pI79DC
Freyja's 4 birthday Breakfast with Auntie Lyn at Wild Mountain Cafe in Ballard, Highly recommend the Buddha's Happiness and Potato Pancakes we included the awesome strange Princess Leia bobble head for cousin Ila away in FL working under the Orange Curtain.  Freyja has asked for candles in every meal since her birthday!!

So we spent the whole morning rummaging around the coast this morning, first we found this amazing "Princess Throne" in a neighbors garbage can...

Then we found a great old frame to add to my NYR Organic Sandwich board, and this great side table which will be an awesome addition to our art and creative area, think Pinterest... I'm going with a little bit of metallic paint will spruce it right up and for $10 was exactly what I have been looking for to hold all our pencils, clay, play phone and markers.

Mary Jane and I picked up some amazing cabbage up the Yachats River Road at the Flower and Farm Stand, we are signing up for a Cow Share with Triple D Ranch and also decided to make some of our own sauerkraut with our pickling kit from theYachats Farm store.

Day 1 of fresh Kraut

                       Day 2 Fermentation Begins

It should take about four days for it to fully ferment before we can jar it up and share!  We also added a bit of Celtic Sea salt and Hijiki Seaweed and Red Onion to add a little pep and sea vegetable minerals to it!  It's my first batch of kraut so please wish me luck and that my family likes it, no doubt there will be a lot more of it in our future!

June 5th was also world Environment Day, so we picked up trash on the beach, including a large piece of Styrofoam most likely from the Japanese Tsunami, lots of debris has been washing up as of late, not to mention the constant small plastic particle pieces...  Just another reason to eat more sea vegetables and increase our iodine supply.  The little girls and I talked about the importance of not littering and keeping our areas and recycling.  There was also a Sea Star Wasting seminar in Yachats, but we already had a softball game that night.  Speaking of M's softball season is finally come to a close.  It was fun, challenging and interesting being her asst. coach this year, it was a humbling experience for her and will be great for the next few years in that league since she was below age.  We looked at photos from the year before and she sure has grown a lot...  She's a great little fielder and just needs to gain her confidence back at the plate against fast pitchers, it will come and she's a determined little spirit, who practices in the yard every day after school and when we get home from games.
